It is 50 years since the creation of the Fiat 238, the van that for many years was associated with ambulances or law enforcement vehicles, at least among the older generation in Italy. The meeting at Montichiari will feature ten specimens in working livery to celebrate the happy occasion.
The Fiat 238 is a cult model, famous for its "working livery" in the service of law enforcement, the armed forces, emergency services and rescue organisations.
Ambulances, police vehicles, fire department transporters: in one form or another, it pops up in pretty much every photo of historic news events dating from its heyday.
The van, produced from 1967 to 1983, was positioned between the successful 600T and 1100T models. The engine was a type 103 with four cylinders, 1221 cc displacement and maximum output (43 hp at 4600 rpm) downtuned and calibrated for safety and fuel economy.
The adoption of front wheel drive and the clever layout and dimensioning allowed for a generous load volume, making the Fiat 238 the ultimate cargo and people carrier.
To mark the van’s 50th anniversary, a Fiat 238 meeting will be held inside the Fiera del Garda Centre in Montichiari (BS), with ten specimens exhibited in honour of this model, which is a quintessential reminder of Italian history.
The event is organised to coincide with REAS, the International Emergency Exhibition, and is supported by Fiamme Blu, the largest online photographic archive of Italian emergency vehicles, and international rescue magazine Emergency-Live.
FCA Heritage is sponsoring the meeting to celebrate this iconic vehicle, which has contributed to important chapters in Italy’s history.
