"Continue my work because I created it to stand the test of time": the words of the race’s founder Vincenzo Florio did not fall on deaf ears, because this year "La Cursa" has reached its 101st edition and continues to attract crowds of spectators to the streets of Sicily.
The competition, which this year will be held from 20 to 23 April in Palermo, consists of three races that will take place simultaneously: the Targa Florio Rally, the Targa Florio Historic Rally and the Targa Florio Classic.
By supporting this important event, FCA confirms its special enthusiasm for historic cars. Alfa Romeo and Abarth are participating as Main Sponsors, while FCA Heritage has selected important classic cars from the Group's past to parade along the island's roads during the Targa Florio Classic. FCA has a long and highly successful association with the Sicilian event.
Alfa Romeo has claimed 10 overall victories, 3 second places, 7 third places and 10 fastest laps. The Alfa Romeo brand will celebrate this amazing tally by entering four splendid cars in the Targa Florio Classic: the Giulietta SZ (1960), the Giulia Sprint Speciale (1963), the Giulia GTA (1965) and the 1600 Spider "Duetto" (1966).
Abarth also boasts a splendid tradition of success in the Targa Florio, including numerous class victories with the 1000 SP and the 124 Rally. This year, two new Abarth 124 Spider cars will act as trailblazers for the event. Also appearing will be three extraordinary models, the Abarth 595 Pista, the new Abarth 124 Spider and the Abarth 124 Rally.
Fiat has topped the podium on no fewer than three occasions. At La Cursa this year, the brand will be on the starting line with one of its most iconic cars, the 500. Spectators lining the roads of Sicily will be able to see a magnificent N series model belonging to the FCA Heritage collection and driven by Roberto Giolito, designer of the 500 launched in 2007 and head of the Heritage Department.
The link between Alfa Romeo and the Targa Florio is strong and gets stronger with every new edition; watch Roberto Giolito's interview to mark the 101st instalment of the Cursa.
“The Quadrifoglio or “Cloverleaf” is the symbol of Alfa Romeo racing cars. It’s 1923 when Ugo Sivocci won the mythical and gruelling Targa Florio rally. Pilots used to paint emblems on the cockpit of their cars. Ugo Sivocci decide to paint a lucky four-leaf clover on the bonnet of its Alfa Romeo RL.”
