Lancia Ypsilon: 40 years of elegance, innovation, and success

The Lancia Ypsilon celebrates four decades, establishing its legacy as a European automotive icon.

24 March 2025

Lancia Ypsilon celebrates its 40th anniversary, establishing its legacy as an icon of elegance and innovation in the automotive world. Since its first appearance at the 1985 Geneva International Motor Show, this city car has enjoyed five generations and 36 special series and won over three million drivers. And today, the legacy lives on with the New Ypsilon, the first vehicle in the brand’s new era.

The birth of an elegant icon of urban mobility

Its story begins way back in 1974 when, in light of the similarities in the image and mission of the two brands, Lancia was first entrusted with the marketing of the Autobianchi A 112 and later with the development of the model which would follow it. Thus, in March 1985 at the Geneva International Motor Show, the international press was introduced to the Y10, which had the difficult task of picking up where the Autobianchi A 112 left off. The pubic was struck by its wedge-shaped design, sloping hood, and slanted windshield. The cabin expanded upwards and the large windows provided the interiors with a greater sense of space: the rear window ended up being bigger than the front one and came with a pop-out electric command (an exclusive optional in the segment). However, the most original stylistic feature was surely the flat and, whatever the main bodywork color, opaque black tailgate—except for some special versions of the last series which experimented with a “CBS” (Cubic Printing System) look. After reaching one million models, the Y10 passed the baton to the new Lancia Y in 1995.

The FIRE engine and all-wheel drive, technology in the service of style

Compact in size yet premium in features, the Group’s attention to the Y10 model goes back to 1985 when it was tasked with debuting some new technologies. Firstly, and most importantly, it featured the new engine from the FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotized Engine) family: four cylinders of 999 cc which supplied 45 hp. Manufactured at the Termoli factory with innovative techniques and the ample use of robotic assembly, it would be the foundation for the majority of the Group’s four-cylinder engines: simple, reliable, and efficient both in terms of production and performance. In addition to the FIRE, the Y10 also featured the proven 1049 cc “Brazil” engine which delivered 56 hp in the aspirated Touring version; meanwhile, for those looking for performance, there was also the 84-hp Turbo version. They both featured even more luxurious interiors, with Alcantara embellishing the top trims. In 1986, the first wave of deluxe features arrived, including electrically powered windows, which also appeared on the FIRE version in the new LX trim. The Y10 4WD was also launched in 1986 with a new all-wheel-drive system which could be controlled with an electro-pneumatic control and a free rear-wheel system during the use of front-wheel drive. Equipped with tires with a larger tread pattern, unique wheels, splash guards, and side protections in resin, the Y4WD became the mountain-getaway car thanks to its ski roof rack and trunk, which could hold up to four pairs of boots, putting to shame the large Japanese 4x4s which were trendy around the ski lodge at the time.

From the Y to the Ypsilon: how a letter can change history

1995 saw the arrival of the Lancia Y which, in keeping with its predecessor, stood out both for its chic and original look and meticulous attention to detail. Its innate class, strong identity, and ability to stay ahead of the curve allowed it to break boundaries, becoming the first city car to make inroads into the fashion, cinema, and art worlds. The premium/compact vehicle was taken to new levels, beginning with its extensive color range in the “Kaleidos” program which included 100 choices. The step forward could also be seen in the amount of interior space which was made available thanks to the use of the chassis of the Fiat Punto—the source of the latest FIRE as well, which continued to improve in displacement, efficiency, and emissions. The tradition of special versions carried on, including the noteworthy “Elefantino Blu”. Later, the third generation of the Lancia Ypsilon debuted in 2003 and was as luxurious and sophisticated as vehicles in higher segments. Slightly longer and 10 cm taller than the previous generation, the new vehicle featured a more spacious and comfortable cabin with refined finishes and high-quality materials. As distinctive and elegant as ever, the design introduced softer lines and elegant details which highlighted the car’s premium spirit. In terms of technology, the new Lancia Ypsilon was loaded with state-of-the-art features for the time, including updated infotainment systems and innovative solutions for driving comfort. Furthermore, the engine range was expanded with more efficient and powerful turbochargers, responding to the demands of a more discerning public.

Lancia Ypsilon: from unconventional charm to women’s preferred fashion car

In 2011, the mantle was taken up by the fourth generation which grew in size and became more attractive to a wider public, while continuing to captivate with its sophisticated style and unconventional class. In fact, for the first, the Ypsilon came in a 5-door version to offer greater comfort to fans of charm and Lancia’s unique style. Furthermore, the extremely high waistline also stood out on the windows which were now more inclined. In 2015, once again proving itself to be a trendsetter, the Ypsilon “fashion city car” came out with remodeled interiors and spectacular and brilliant and eco-friendly Euro 6 engines. Moreover, it was made over to become even more elegant and sophisticated, offering refined details, exclusive materials, and attention-to-detail in the design of all three of the launch trims: Silver, Gold and Platinum. Being ahead of the curve also meant being sustainable: 2009 saw the launch of the distinctive EcoChic badge, a brand within the brand which would later appear on the Lancia Ypsilon LPG and CNG versions with the 70-hp .9 Twinair engine. Both of these were able wed affordability to driving pleasure in perfect Ypsilon style, while continuing to take heed of fuel use and emissions. The Lancia model’s success was also intimately tied up with its close bond with women. The fashion city car has been able to create an intimate dialogue, becoming the four-wheeled gal pal for shopping, taking the kids to school, going to work, and taking off on weekend getaways. After 14 years of commercial success, the production of the Ypsilon came to a halt last July, marking the end of an important era for the brand and, simultaneously, opening a new phase for Lancia with the debut of the New Ypsilon.

36 unique special series which made history

One of the secrets of the iconic Ypsilon’s longevity lies in its innate ability to stay ahead of the curve, making strides in both technology and design while staying true to the Lancia DNA. This was well-understood by the designers at the Centro Stile Lancia who produced 36 special series over 40 years: from the very first 1986 Y10 Fila, created in collaboration with the Biella-based sports textile brand, to the Missioni, which featured velvet-lined interiors and the world-renowned Italian brand’s trademark fabrics, and the 1987 Y10 Turbo with its Martini livery which called back to the colors of triumphant Lancia rally cars. Furthermore, it is also worth mentioning the 191 Y10 Ego with its Poltrona Frau leather seats and the more luxurious 1992 Y10 Avenue, which featured Alcantara interiors and a tone-on-tone tailgate. And the special editions kept on coming during successive generations of Lancia’s city car: from the Ypsilon Dodo (2001) to the recent Ypsilon Alberta Ferretti (2022), the Ypsilon Momo Design (2005), Ypsilon Versus (2008), Ypsilon Elle (2010), Ypsilon Elefantino (2013), Ypsilon Black&Noir (2019) and Ypsilon Monogram (2019).

“The right car for beautiful people”

The Y10 entered automobile communications history with its unforgettable “right car for beautiful people” campaign. The huge impact, the increased invisibility, and lasting image of this campaign were aided by the fact that the same style and message were continuously used for over three years—all it took was a change in the spokesperson to attract attention. The Y10’s original campaign featuring a female robot in a city of the future was also hugely successful, as it effectively expressed the vehicle’s innovative nature. The commercial produced to coincide with the release of the Y10 was equally as interesting and included a Lancia being cleverly compared to a Rolls-Royce. The Y10 embodied the luxury and exclusivity of urban mobility, while the Rolls-Royce was emblematic of the elegance and prestige of long-distance journeys. Strengthening its identity and notoriety over the years, Lancia has always made use of an unconventional communication strategy for the Ypsilon. The spokespeople who have contributed to its success over the years include the actors Carol Alt, Eleonora Brigliadori, Giuliano Gemma, and Sergio Castellitto, the director Gianni Boncompagni, the TV host Gerry Scotti, the model Eva Herzigova, and, more recently Stefano Gabbana, Vincent Cassel, Kasia Smutniak, and Cristiana Capotondi—a constant advocate for women’s rights and the star of the “Together to protect” (2022) and “Punch” (2025) campaigns.

The New Ypsilon, the forerunner of Lancia’s new era

The sinuous shapes of the New Lancia Ypsilon are inspired by the models that have made history for the brand, just like the round taillights, a clear reference to the Lancia Stratos, and the iconic “chalice” on the front, now revisited in three beams of LED light. Not to mention the fact that the New Lancia Ypsilon is the first Stellantis production car with the S.A.L.A. system, the smart virtual interface that ensures a comfortable driving experience in line with Lancia’s effortless technology. Moreover, the Italian brand's new creation is also best-in-class in the premium hatchback B-segment, courtesy of the most comprehensive specifications in its category: a large 10.25” display, the best standard parking aid system, and the greatest exterior lighting system in terms of technology and extent. It is also the only model in the segment equipped with Level 2 Autonomous Driving as standard on the Cassina version. The line-up consists of three versions for three different types of customers: the elegant New Lancia Ypsilon, dedicated to younger customers; the New Lancia Ypsilon LX, the highest spec and fullest version; the New Lancia Ypsilon Edizione Cassina, for those who want to feel at home in the car. Each trim level of the New Lancia Ypsilon refers to the elegant yet sustainable concept of feeling at home, in perfect Lancia style, culminating in the exclusive New Lancia Ypsilon Edizione Cassina, the epitome of design, comfort, and well-being. Every version in the line-up is available in electric and hybrid configurations, making the model a segment leader in terms of versatility, efficiency, and respect for the environment.

The return to the rally world

The New Ypsilon has given rise to extraordinary versions: the bold Ypsilon Rally 4 HF, marking Lancia’s return to the rally world, and the 280-hp Ypsilon HF, the high-performance road version which will make its market debut halfway through the year. With 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in less than 5.7 seconds, the Ypsilon HF combines superior performance with a design inspired by the most radical vehicles from Lancia’s past, including a lowered suspension and a widened wheel track. Meanwhile, there has been plenty of buzz around the new Ypsilon Rally 4 HF, which has already received 80 European preorders in just three months. It is set to be the star of the Trofeo Lancia, which will take place within the Italian Absolute Rally Championship (CIAR) with six races across five dates. With its stunning €360,000 prize fund, the Trofeo Lancia has established itself as one of the highest paying races on the national stage and provides drivers with the chance to win a spot in the official Lancia Corse HF team in the next FIA ERC season (if the winner is an Under-35). Specifically, the new Ypsilon Rally 4 HF is equipped with a 212-HP, 1.2 Turbo engine, a SADEV 5-speed gearbox, adjustable Ohlin shock absorbers, Sparco-branded seats, belts and steering wheels, and high-performance tires from the MICHELIN Pilot Sport range. Notably, the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF and 280-HP Ypsilon HF models were fine-tuned by Miki Biasion, a genuine motorsport legend, who forged an unbreakable bond with Lancia in the 1980s and 90s, becoming the winningest Italian driver in history. Behind the iconic Delta of the Martini Racing team, Biasion won the 1988 and 1989 World Championships, helping Lancia become the most successful brand ever with ten World Constructors’ Championships, three Constructors’ and Endurance World Championships, one 1000 Miglia, two Targa Florio, and one Carrera Panamericana.
